Coldwell Banker® sells the iconic Basic Instinct house
The famous mansion where Sharon Stone portrayed Catherine Tramell in the 1992 film Basic Instinct has been listed for sale by Coldwell Banker®. Located in the stunning Carmel Highlands of California, this 12,441-square-foot property is part of an expansive and exclusive cliffside estate overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The scenery has it all: rocky beaches, cypress groves, and breathtaking ocean views—at a price to match: $91.35 million.
The main residence, nicknamed “The Lodge,” features eight bedrooms. It served as the on-screen home of Stone’s character in the movie. The estate, known as SeaCliff, is located about eight miles south of Monterey and boasts more than 1,000 feet of dramatic Pacific coastline. The grounds, surrounded by cypress trees, also appeared in the HBO series Big Little Lies.
The current owners, Gary and Kerry Vickers, purchased the land from the estate of adventurer Steve Fossett, the first man to fly solo around the world in a hot air balloon. They first listed the property in 2019 for $52.37 million after their children moved out, but failed to attract a buyer. Since then, they have invested $11 million in renovations and added 1.31 acres in 2023.
The main residence is just one of six structures on the property. Luxurious features abound: three kitchens, 11 fireplaces, a 1,250-bottle wine cellar, a 10-burner stove, sauna, steam room, and an indoor spa. Outside, a barrel sauna and hidden cold plunge pool can be accessed via a secluded path, along with a Zen garden featuring raw jade stones.
The Lodge’s two-story library pays tribute to Fossett, with a domed ceiling covered in gold and silver leaf, astronomical artwork, and oak shelves housing mementos and photographs from his expeditions—all of which are included in the sale.
Since the failed sale in 2019, the luxury real estate market in the area has strengthened, with both prices and interest on the rise. In fact, actor Brad Pitt purchased a nearby home in 2022 for $40 million, located less than a mile from SeaCliff.
