After the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and wildfire, young real estate consultant Colbert Coldwell saw the need for honest and professional real estate services to help rebuild the city. Coldwell disapproved of dishonest practices where real estate consultants acquired properties on their own, often from misinformed sellers at ridiculously low prices. In 1913, Benjamin Arthur Banker joined the firm as a salesman, finding that he and Colbert Coldwell had similar views and ethics.
Coldwell and Banker were the first in the industry to offer warranties to sellers and were the pioneers of wagering and implementing the seller's statement, even before it was required by law. With the launch of coldwellbanker.com, the company became the first real estate brand in the United States to offer a comprehensive service with an online presence.
